Southern comfort - Makaroa, Jan 2021

The mighty Makarora

We were delighted to be selected for a sit in the Haast Pass, just outside the tiny village of Makarora.  We would be here for three weeks.  This is like the perfect sit for us.  A few easy care farm animals, a couple of gorgeous dogs for company all wrapped up in the most beautiful scenery that the South Island of NZ has to offer.  Oh, and of course right on a river that just begs to be fished!

Gin, the foxy enjoyed lap time the most .... refusing to go outside or do any farm work if there was even a hint of rain

Holly, the Border Collie, lived outside and absolutely loved chasing hawks off the property, finding rabbit holes and hanging out with Aria, the pet lamb.  She was also up for any and all adventures up for the taking each day on the farm.

Buffy, the pony, tried to tell us everyday that she didn't have enough to eat!

We have never come across such a sweet and affable bull before ... meet Basil, the Belted Galloway.

Basil had four lady friends and four babies as well.

And there were LOTS of chickens, ducks and ducklings.

Whilst the farm and animals kept us fairly busy and provided lots of fun

We still had time for plenty of adventure.  Starting with trying to catch a trout from the river, a short walk across the road.  We saw so many brown and rainbow trout just hanging out in the eddy's of the river but for a while it seemed we were destined not to get up close and personal with one.  We tried flies, spinners and all manner and variety of bait but it wasn't until we had been fishing for a couple of weeks before we struck it lucky!  Although some of us wouldn't call it luck.

Even though it wasn't always warm, despite being the middle of summer!

Mid summer dusting of snow!!!

It was always very, very peaceful and pretty

Someone's pretty chuffed

One day we had the (not so) bright idea to climb the mountain at the back of our property.  Because we took a short cut across our place we missed this sign at the start of the track!

Upon reflection it was just as well we didn't realise how far it was or we may have missed the amazing colours and textures that make up the NZ bushland.  Especially in this wild area of the country.

Yep, that's where we are off to!

Moss map of the world

Hmmm, not so sure this was our best idea!

Pretty shrooms

How many shades of green?

On the homeward stretch

We also took some time out to visit the Blue Pools just up the road. A good 20min walk in and it appeared we had come to paradise.

What a wonderful part of the country!  It often occurs to us that we would not get to, or even think to, spend time in some of the places we end up house sitting.  And we are always glad of the opportunity to discover somewhere new.
